Sensory Bags/Bottles

I have found that many students need a little extra help to regulate themselves while they are at school - they may have excess energy, may become frustrated easily or may become anxious.  Sensory strategies can be calming and helpful.  While researching this topic online I found a number of interesting and easy to make sensory bags.  I tried making them with 2 students and they both really enjoyed the activity and stated that they felt the bags would help them.

Here is one of my students adding objects to his bag.  He told me today that his sister wanted to make one too!
Here are the directions.
  1. Put about 1/3 cup hair gel into a ziploc style sandwich baggie
  2. Add whatever color food coloring you wish (just a few drops)
  3. Add glitter (the kids love the sparkles)
  4. Add additional sensory objects - felt shapes, marbles, beads, small fish, etc. - whatever your child is interested in
  5. Squeeze the air out of the bag and seal it up
  6. I then used clear packing tape to ensure that it wouldn't be opened
  7. You can even double bag it if necessary
  8. Squeeze and blend everything together
  9. Enjoy!

Have a great weekend!

As I wrote on my home page, I have been a Counselor at the South School for over 10 years.  I am constantly trying to improve my skills as a Counselor and to learn new strategies that I can pass along to my students.
I also am a mom to two amazing boys who teach me new things every day (including how to be patient!).  When I'm not working on transporting my children to all of their activities, my husband and I love to travel with our family.  We enjoy camping, kayaking, biking and just about anything else we can do outdoors!
